On a Spring afternoon in 2016, my dad and I set out to look for Holy Cross Cemetery. Since the valley had changed through development over the years, we found the cemetery with growth covering most of the grave sites. The tools and material we took were not going to be enough. After an hour, we realized that the two of us would need help.
With the help of my sister Susie, she used Facebook and mutual contacts inviting family and friends to join us in cleaning the cemetery. Our request for help was answered with enthusiastic family and friends all saying “let’s do this.”
We know that families have gotten together for years before us to clean the cemetery. The Church and the Knights of Columbus have been very instrumental in our groups' success. They have been mowing the over growth for years, and have allowed us access down to the cemetery.
Our cleaning consist of weeding around each grave site as well as the surrounding areas. This includes cleaning, scrubbing and repairing headstones. In some cases we have replaced both old worn wooden crosses, cement headstones donated by a local San Diego retailer and setting new grave markers.
All who have come to clean the cemetery found it to be very rewarding! And if they could speak, I’m sure the family members in the cemetery would be proud that they haven’t been forgotten.
Peace to you
